Getting to Know Ryan
As a principal at Armstrong, Fleming & Moore, Inc. Ryan provides comprehensive financial planning services to individuals, couples, and business owners, including guidance on investment, retirement, tax, estate planning, and insurance. Ryan’s goal is to be the first call for his clients when there is a question with a dollar-sign associated with it.
Financial planning was a natural fit for Ryan. He watched his mother struggle after his father left at age 8. She worked multiple jobs, cared for three boys, and provided an example of how to persevere no matter what unexpected obstacles life throws at you. Finance was a fascination, with his first introduction a subscription to Fortune magazine at age 13. Ryan went to community college at Montgomery College in Rockville to save money and gain entry to the University of Maryland, where he studied finance. In 1991, he was hired as an intern at Alexandra Armstrong Advisers, the firm that eventually became Armstrong, Fleming & Moore, Inc. While an intern, Ryan worked his way through school with two other jobs – the manager of Cairo Liquors in Dupont Circle (a fantastic job for a college student) and a waiter for a variety of catering companies.
With exceptional mentors like former partners Alex Armstrong, John MacIntyre, and Norma Severns, Ryan was raised in the firm and has been around financial planning for three decades. His imprint on the firm is its teaching hospital-like environment, since that’s the way he felt he gained the most experience. The collaborative style and open sharing of knowledge make AFM a place where he is still constantly learning and improving. Ryan is a member of the AFM Investment Committee and is AFM’s resident tech geek.
A native Washingtonian, Ryan and his wife, Betsy, live in Washington, D.C. with their dog, Sami. Daughter Chelsea is launched into life. They eat out a lot – whether takeout or at the restaurant – so don’t hesitate to ask for a restaurant recommendation. Ryan is a long-time Caps fan and season ticket holder, and he and Betsy agree that being in Vegas for the Caps win in Game 5 of the Stanley Cup Finals is a highlight of their lives. In addition to enjoying all things hockey, Ryan loves technology and gadgets, and he thoroughly enjoys the 2 to 3 great shots per round he makes en route to shooting 100 in golf.
